Celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Women’s Ordination to the Priesthood

Diocese of Canterbury CrestGreetings!

You may be aware that Dioceses throughout the country will this year be celebrating the 20th Anniversary of Women’s Ordination to the Priesthood. There is a national service of celebration which will be held in St. Paul’s Cathedral on May 3rd at 5pm which will follow a procession from Westminster Abbey starting at 2pm. The service itself is a ticketed event but anyone is welcome to join in the procession and gather outside St. Paul’s Cathedral where the service will be relayed on a large screen.

Here in Canterbury our own celebration will take place in the Cathedral at 11am on Saturday May 10th. The readings and one or two of the hymns will be taken from the service that took place in the Cathedral on Sunday May 8th 1994 and these will sit with some new liturgical expressions which have been composed especially for these anniversary celebrations. We are delighted that the music will be led by the recently formed Canterbury Cathedral Girls Choir.

The service is open to all who would like to attend and I take this opportunity to repeat what I have said before that this service is an opportunity for the whole church to come together to celebrate this particular landmark in its journey together. You are all welcome to stay for lunch after the service at the kind invitation of the Dean, but for catering purposes the lunch must be a ticketed event with bookings made in advance. If you would like to stay for lunch, please complete the attached form and return it to Emma Clarke, Events Co-ordinator Canterbury Cathedral (details on form)by April 11th at the very latest.

Crèche facilities will be available during the service, but again, we need advance booking in order to ensure appropriate cover. Once again, please complete the attached form and return it according to the directions on the form.

I am very much looking forward to seeing you all on May 10th, to reflect together on the journey that has led us to this point and to pray for our new journey that we will shape together.
