Reading the Bible
The Bible, a collection of sixty–six books written across a period of about a thousand years, is the world’s number one best seller. Within its pages we find a wonderful variety of literary styles: history and story, myth and allegory, poetry and imagery, prayer and praise. The Bible reflects the entire human condition. The Bible is about people without aeroplanes and computers, people without our technology, but it deals with the constants in life. It describes people who laughed, people who cried, people who cheated, who ran away, who murdered, who gave their all for their beliefs. It talks about people who were faithful in friendship, who fell in love, who gave birth, who fell ill and died. In other words, it is about people just like us.Perhaps that’s why the Bible has shaped the lives of the rich and powerful, as well as of people who have nothing. Time after time it has changed the lives of individuals and communities.
If you want to read the Bible but are not sure how to go about it, please speak to one of the ministers, or contact The Bible Society, The Bible Reading Fellowship or Scripture Union. They offer plenty of resources and it’s just a matter of finding the right one for you.
