VAT to be charged at 20 percent on alterations to listed churches
The Government has decided to impose VAT on alterations to Listed Places of Worship. The Church of England has set up an e-petition to put pressure on them to change their minds. Churches will have to raise an extra 20% to pay for any alterations, adding up to an extra £20 million a year having to be raised by volunteers. This is a real blow to church communities who are seeking to maintain and develop their churches (including improved toilet, kitchen, disability and energy saving facilities) to enable churches to be more widely used by the community. It needs 100,000 signatures to have a chance of this petition being debated in Parliament.
Please help to bring back zero-rate VAT on alterations to listed church buildings by signing the petition before 4 May: http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/32229.
